The demise of President Kim Il Sung, the father of the nation, in July Juche 83 (1994), plunged Korea in deep sorrow.

US-led imperialist reactionaries made desperate attempts to stifle socialist Korea. To make matters worse, Korea suffered natural calamities and encountered economic difficulties and food shortage. Korea at the crossroads of life and death became the focus of the world’s attention.

On the morning of January 1, Juche 84 (1995), the day that dawned in the tears of blood for the Korean people, Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il called at Tabaksol post of a Korean People’s Army unit and set forth important tasks which would serve as a guideline for strengthening and developing the KPA into invincible revolutionary armed forces. That day he said warmly that he would be a Supreme Commander who shares life and death, sweets and bitters with the soldiers.

His inspection of the day was the starting point of Songun politics. Through the inspection, he declared before the times and history his iron will and conviction that he would defend the destiny of the country and the people and accomplish the revolutionary cause of Juche pioneered by President Kim Il Sung by grasping arms and relying on the army.
